Diet

Your diet is an essential part of having good oral health, since food, going through the mouth goes in contact with the teeth, and consequently, with dental plaque.

Dental plaque is a thin film that sticks to the tooth's surface, and is resposible for a large majority of dental problems.  Dental plaque needs sugar for its metabolism.  When you don't take care of your teeth properly, the plaque will use the sugar from you food to make acids, that attack the enamel of the teeth, causing cavities.

It is important that your diet is balanced in order to promote health, a healthy diet is as follows:

  • 40 % bread, rice or pasta
  • 20 % vegetables
  • 20 % dairy
  • 10 % fruits
  • 10 % white and red meat and eggs

To achieve even better health, it is important to follow these tips:

  • Food with a high content of sugar consumed during main meals are less harmful, since the production of saliva produced neutralizes the bacterial acids.  Therefore, it is recommended to eat sweet right after a meal, rather than eating sweets in between meals.
  • Avoid the habit of "snacking" in between meals, since it will increase the production of acids by the dental plaque.
  • Always brush after any meal.
  • Floss at least once a day.
  • See your dentist on a regular basis.
