Systemic bone loss has been proposed as a risk factor for periodontal disease; however, the relationship between these two diseases is still not clear. In way to bring evidences of that relationship, a study accomplished with 70 female patient postmenopausal tried to establish relationship between the skeletal bone mineral density and periodontal disease . Results showed that skeletal bone mineral density measured through energy x-ray absorptiometry is related to the bone loss of the alveolar crest. The authors concluded that postmenopausal osteopenia is a risk factor for the periodontal disease in women.
