A study accomplished by the American Academy of Periodontogy with sonic and ultrasonic scalers arrived the following conclusions: 
- sonic, ultrasonic as well hand scalers seem to obtain the same results in the removal of plaque, calculus and endotoxin; ultrasonics scalers produce less damage to the root surface when compared to hand or sonic scalers. 
- furcations imay be more accessible with sonic and ultrasonic than manual scalers. 
- a great disadvantage of the sonic and ultrasonic is the production of contaminated aerosol. 
- the use of antimicrobials to the lavage during the ultrasonic instrumentation seems not to present significant clinical advantages.
