Dental Anxiety and Phobia

The treatment of patients with dental anxiety or dental phobia presents a challenge to the dentist.

Since the occurrence of such patients represents 8 % and 4 % respectively of the population, it is of great importance that the dentist knows how to proceed correctly in the identification (diagnosis) of the patients mentioned above.

Dental phobics avoid visiting the dentist at all costs with the exception of emergencies; the anxiety prone patient sees the dentist but experiences great suffering. Though the use of behavioral  techniques or the use of drugs, it is feasible to treat such patients with minimal discomfort or mental distress.
